The Intervention

My husband Robert and I recently hold an intervention with one of my best friends.  For those of you who have never done so, staging an intervention for a family member or friend in need is hard.  It’s emotional, time consuming and worrisome.  One never knows how somebody will react to the fact that you feel the need to sit them down and discuss a concerning habit of theirs with them.

First, Robert and I built a fire to reassure my friend that this is a warm and loving environment.  We then assumed our most non-threatening poses.  See how kind and understanding we look?  Yup, we rock this compassion stuff.

We then invited Chief to join us.  Oh!  Didn’t I mention this intervention was for my dog?  Sorry.  Yup, this shit just GOT REAL, baby!

Anyway.

A little warily at first, Chief made himself comfortable.

In order to ease the harshness over what he was about to hear, I started off gently and complimented him on some of his amazing abilities, unique quirks and overall genius.

I told him about how smart he is and reminded him that I was secretly proud for having to spend $250 on a new door handle because he was able to open the old one and get out the front door.  I reminded him that he is indeed, a very advanced and superior animal.  I told him that he’s the best dog in the world.

And then he got really comfortable.  If there is a background soundtrack to life in my house, it’s the sound he’s making pictured below.  All.  The.  Time.  I’ll pause for a minute to let your brain cue the music for you.  Slurp.

The conversation went about like this.

“Remember the day that the disgusting, dirty, anti-social gigantor cat was hissing at you from underneath a car?  Did you listen to the hisses and back away?  No.  No, you did not.  And I had to yank an embedded severed cat claw from your tender nose.”

“Oh!  How about the time that you went after the cat in the bushes, while on your leash?  And you got all tangled up in there, the cat scratched the shit out of your ear and laughed at your sorry ass while I endured my own scratch injuries from having to untangle your leash?  Was that fun?  No! No, it was not.”

I then proceeded to remind him about the time that he was teasing a cat at the playground and it jumped on his head and scratched the daylights out of him.  He was helpless to do anything.  We had to intervene and save him.  I reminded him that he’s a 90-pound big dog and that the cat was maybe eight pounds.  But guess who won that fight?  Not my dog.

We finally wrapped it up by telling him this:  “So the purpose of today’s friendly little chat is this.  STAY AWAY FROM THE CATS.  All of them.  They’re not good for you and frankly they make you look incredibly stupid.  Every single time.  Honestly, we’d send you to cat rehab but they’re pretty rare and I already spent our extra money on a box of wine.  You’ll have to work on breaking this unhealthy cat obsession on your own.”

“One more thing.  I think eating grass to throw up on purpose is a form of bulimia.  I’d look into that.  It’s not healthy and it’s plain gross.  Thanks!  Love you!”

“Oh, and STOP peeing on the carpets!”

I had to have an intervention for my dog. Really.

Since I wrote this 2-1/2 years ago, Chief did pass on. You can read about that here if you want the sad doggie story.

  • MomboMombo - LOVE this post! hahahahahaha – literally laughing out loud. (and WTF – why do dogs love to eat dog poop – other dogs’ poop, and also: but but but but especially: cat poop!!??? ewwwwww. I guess an intervention should be planned…. after the snow melts…. or sometime …. after I let the cat out. xoxoJanuary 6, 2013 – 6:40 amReplyCancel

    • admin - I have no idea about the poop. Luckily, that’s not Chief’s biggest weakness but my last dog, Arthur, LOVED horse poop. He’d eat it, roll in it and literally smelled like shit every time he snuck into play with it. Which was a lot. 🙂January 6, 2013 – 10:17 amReplyCancel

  • Henriette - OMG! You are too funny! Looove the drawings, cracks me up every time!!!January 6, 2013 – 11:18 amReplyCancel

    • admin - Just for you! Glad you approve! 🙂January 6, 2013 – 11:44 amReplyCancel

  • Rachel - Man, did you have me going. I was waiting for a heartfelt intervention with a PERSON! This post is hilarious. Absolutely love the pictures. I’m adding you to my blog roll…January 6, 2013 – 1:51 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - Rachel,
Really? You have no idea how totally excited that makes me! Thanks so much for visiting and for adding me to your blogroll! <3January 6, 2013 – 6:07 pmReplyCancel

  • Jodi Shaw - Hi! New reader here. You left a comment on my blog, thank you btw and I thought I’d head over and visit and I’m sure glad I did. I needed a laugh on this dark and gloomy day and I’m so glad I was able to be a fly on the wall of your family intervention, though I must say disclosure to the licking balls part might have been more user friendly for those of us not used to that type of censored material LOL.

I love your story and your drawings on Chief. I think all us dog owners can relate. No matter how many times we tell our Harley to leave the cat alone, the cat always ends up looking at him like he’s the dumbest stick in the forest. Too funny 🙂January 7, 2013 – 11:15 amReplyCancel

    • admin - Hi Jodi! I’m so glad you found Finding Ninee and that our intervention with Chief got a laugh from you. I’ll keep in mind your advice on disclosure regarding sensitive material in the future, too. 🙂
What is it that these dogs of ours are unable to figure out that the cats win? Always, the cat wins. Always…
Thanks again for the visit and for the comment!January 7, 2013 – 11:40 amReplyCancel

  • Kerri - Can you come over and stage an intervention for Bailey? He freaks every time we pass the same fallen tree. Oh and if you can stop him from eating Boo’s toys even better.January 9, 2013 – 2:15 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - Kerri, sure thing! Although, I should warn you…Chief didn’t really listen. At all. Although we haven’t had another cat incident (yet), he peed on the carpet this afternoon. You know…you might not be this mean but I’ve heard of people putting tabasco sauce on toys and stuff that they didn’t want their dog to eat. I’m not sure if I could do it, but desperate times and desperate measures, and all that.
      Thanks so much for the comment!January 9, 2013 – 5:52 pmReplyCancel

  • Kenya G. Johnson - You and I were reading each other’s posts at the same time. You beat – I got interrupted. Anyway – HA HA HAAAAAAH. Chief licking was hilarious. It is the most annoying sound. Even on a little dog. Been there, heard that. Gross!!!March 19, 2013 – 6:59 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - We were? How awesome is that? And how awesome are you? And it really is the most annoying sound. Nasty…March 19, 2013 – 7:16 pmReplyCancel

  • Janine Huldie - Lol, Kristi could not help, but laugh so hard at Chief licking his balls part. Sorry the child in me just couldn’t help myself. And the pictures just sealed my fate of laughter for the night. Thanks I really and truly needed this one after the week I have been having!! 🙂 TALUMarch 19, 2013 – 7:56 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - Janine, glad I could give you a laugh after a super long week! I won’t remind you that it’s Tuesday. 🙂March 19, 2013 – 8:01 pmReplyCancel

  • Chris at Hye Thyme Cafe - Poor Chief. Hope he took the intervention well LOL. I especially loved your use of pixelation. 🙂 [#TALU]March 19, 2013 – 8:50 pmReplyCancel

  • christine - Haha! I hope the intervention helped. I can’t even believe your dog gets torn apart by so many cats. I’d feel sorry for him if it weren’t so funny.March 19, 2013 – 9:49 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - Sadly it’s not an exaggeration. He is attacked by cats ALL THE TIME. And yeah, it’s pretty funny. 🙂March 19, 2013 – 11:45 pmReplyCancel

  • Debbie McCormick - LOVE! hahaha – This was fantastic. (talu)March 20, 2013 – 8:35 amReplyCancel

    • admin - 🙂 thanks for the talu visit!March 20, 2013 – 9:31 amReplyCancel

  • Melissa S. - So, you guys are like dog whisperers or something? Cuz I’ve tried having the “eating grass is like bulimia” discussion, and they just blow me off. Roll their eyes and everything. Love the “licking” panel, btw. I think men do secretly high five their dogs for that. Thanks for sharing on TALU!March 20, 2013 – 2:23 pmReplyCancel

    • Kristi - Um. Yeah. Dog whisperers who whisper the FK to MY dog (’cause Robert reminds me all the time and I love my dog but he gets more annoyed about there being diarrhea on the rugs like always. And I know men high five dogs for that. It’s just jealousy, really.April 14, 2013 – 8:45 pmReplyCancel

  • MJM - That was freaking hilarious…and I love the illustrations…you have such a fantastic way of telling a story. See this is why you are…my blog idol!April 14, 2013 – 2:46 pmReplyCancel

    • Kristi - Thanks my new best friend! And hahah stick around for a while, I’m sure I’ll disappoint you eventually 😉April 14, 2013 – 8:54 pmReplyCancel

  • Mike - OMG I LOVE the drawings, Kristi! I’m so glad you and Robert were very patient and loving with Chief. Cats can be so nasty and dogs just don’t get it until they get swiped across the nose with those sharp claws. I always tell folks a cat will tear your dogs’s face to shreds. Phoenix has a kitty that has tormented him…:)

    • Kristi Campbell - Mike,
Going to check out Phoenix’s attack right now. And you’re right – those claws are nasty!January 26, 2014 – 4:12 pmReplyCancel

  • Sarah @ Thank You Honey - OMG Kristi! That is too funny! Love the illustrations!January 27, 2015 – 8:32 amReplyCancel

  • Seana Turner - Very nice drawings! As someone who is getting a cartoon of the ground, I appreciate it very much! My dog also eats grass, and that really made me laugh. She’s way too slow to face off with a cat, but I can imagine that smart cats cause many sweet dogs a problem:)January 27, 2015 – 9:04 amReplyCancel

  • Jhanis - Hhhahaha! Can’t get over the dog licking his balls! LMAO Awesome drawings!January 28, 2015 – 10:19 pmReplyCancel

  • ivy - Oh man the slurp! Gag! We need an intervention here for bears…any interest?August 9, 2015 – 12:13 amReplyCancel

  • JT Walters - You and Robert do have the intervention thing down.

This however was ducking hysterical right up to the point Chief passed.

    Made me laugh Kristi!!!August 9, 2015 – 12:15 amReplyCancel

  • Elizabeth - Sweet Chief! Sounds like he was a character. 🙂August 10, 2015 – 9:51 amReplyCancel

  • Christine Organ - Hilarious! I think we need to run an intervention on our dogs too.August 10, 2015 – 11:40 amReplyCancel

  • Sandra - Ah crap Kristen, I was all ready to start putting down dogs as a whole (’cause mine are stupid as f*ck – I have three), and then you have to get it out there that Chief is no longer of this earth. On a more positive note, please teach me to draw your cute little cartoon characters. I think they’d cheer me up immensely. Yours always do!August 20, 2015 – 12:21 pmReplyCancel
